by Scott YanowJaniva Magness has gained a strong reputation as a fine blues singer who appears in clubs around the Los Angeles area. On this CD, she often stretches beyond the blues into folk music, pop and light R&B while retaining her blues roots. Jeff Turmes, who contributed all 13 songs (Magness co-wrote the opening Good Car), plays guitar, bass, and tenor and baritone saxophones on various tracks, in addition to taking four vocals himself. Not a release for blues or jazz purists, the diverse set does have some catchy lyrics, high musicianship from the backup band, and many appealing vocals by Janiva Magness. Although Magness would be better served if she stuck exclusively to the blues (where she seems to be strongest), the singer displays some impressive versatility and adaptability.
