In between their first and third albums, the Dallas-based Jencey Hirunrusme and Ryan Hamilton got engaged, moved in together, suffered through infidelity, broke up, and somehow managed to keep their indie folk-pop outfit Smile Smile alive and thriving. As a result, 2012’s aptly titled Marry a Stranger is wrought with an array of moods, emotions, and tensions as Hirunrusme and Hamilton split the songwriting duties down the middle. “This Is for Real” opens with both of them harmonizing over a delightfully twee ditty. Their take on heartbreaking topics makes for a white-knuckled contrast with the music's uplifting and sunny melodies. It’s not until the more biting “Next to Me” that we hear honest emotion, as Hamilton angrily sings: “If you’re lookin’ to get to me, get in line\u002FI’ve lost all self control between my mouth and my mind.
