DEERPEOPLE’s first proper release, a self titled EP recorded with the help of Trent Bell (who most recently worked with fellow Oklahomans Flaming Lips on their re-imagining of Dark Side of the Moon) is a five song collective that mixes together familiar elements of folk and pop to present a well-produced cocktail of sounds that never really seems to find the right blend.Compact Disc: In this limited run of 300, each disc is uniquely painted and numbered by the band. Each disc also included a signed not from the band.Every song balances catchy keyboard riffs, quirky bubbling noises and slick violin sounds without getting jumbled. Although Deerpeople's sound is complicated, the band never seems as if it is trying too hard. Within each track, the quintet has constructed a sense of building chaos. Songs begin with a soft rumbling and evolve into a different animal. And these tracks are danceable, too. New Dance mixes driving string arrangements with a hypnotic pulsating beat.Deerpeople is crafting fun songs with a clever pop sensibility and the ability to turn potential messes into musical magic. Yes, there are a few deer bands in existence (Deerhunter, Deerhoof, Deer Tick), but it's definitely worth making room for at least one more.
