Five Deadly Venoms is Shaolin Death Squad's third release. The album's namesake is a 5 piece song-cylce, which is based off of the 1978 Shaw Brothers kung-fu classic movie. It is a story of skilled students and masters, the story of money and murder, the story of bad and good, greed and revenge. Initially, the Five Deadly Venoms was only to reference the song cycle, but turned out to shape the overall theme of the album even though the remaining six tunes were not directly related. With its very visual music, FDV has some aspects of the kitsch action film’s original soundtrack. But don’t be mistaken: we are in the presence of a great album, deliciously hybrid, with a well-maintained personality. Every note is performed with all the elegance and precision of a Shaolin warrior. It’s a great album for fans and newcomers alike. --Aaron Burstein, University of Connecticut press
