I've listened to this album quite a lot since its release and I must say I can't get these songs out of my head. This is some top quality Omar. It's easy to notice how all of the little details are labored over, all of the effects carefully executed. The sound is, as hinted at with my first comment, a sort of psychedelic, hard-rocking dub. Deantoni Parks carries the songs with his variations on the drumming style of the genre. Omar's bass playing and tone are very punchy. Thick, fuzzy bass. I'm glad he didn't hand the duties to Juan Alderete as he normally does, because I feel like I can notice the difference here and I enjoy it (love Juan, though). It felt so good to hear Omar's voice singing lyrics the first time around on Xenophanes, and knowing that this album would have his voice alone was exciting for me. Finally getting my hands on it, I can say the excitement was well-founded. I just get a kick out of hearing the man sing. He surprised me with both his lows and his highs. The guitar on this album doesn't take the center stage as it has been known to do on Omar's records...really, it seems like the songs are greater than the sum of their parts. A little bit of the right thing in the right place is doing a great service to the music. However, that takes the album through a tense journey, and in this case we are given a release in the final track, El Diablo Y La Tierra, to complete the experience. I think of it like the way Luciforms ended Octahedron with a bang. For this solo album I was much more impressed by it, though. The guitar gets its chance to shine and it doesn't disappoint. Not for me, anyway.I think my favorite thing about the record aside from the vocals is the effects. Omar's guitar tone seems to dissolve into an electronic beat in Que Disse Pessoa? and it really just blew me away when I first heard it. Little things like that tickle me. A lot of things about this album tickle me. It's a delicious offering.Definitely check it out if you're poking around these parts. I'd recommend it as a place to start with Omar as much as I would Xenophanes. This one is just cool and collected in comparison.
