The Neutrinos are about to make an impact. Carving up an art-rock schtick with more than enough substance to back up their undoubted style; they have been plying their sound in the quiet East Anglian city of Norwich for a little while now, selling out shows the kids. Theyve already holidayed their rock in New York and Europe, and now, with Lead track Build Him Till He Breaks is a paean to male inadequacies. From the offset, dark and brooding; with Dragnet-era Fall guitars repeating, churning and creeping up and up to a crescendo of discordancy while the whole time Karen Reillys scathing lyrics take centre stage, ruling roost over this beautiful, claustrophobic tangle. The B-side Mothers Mother Tongue shows smart-pop suss with dirty Sonic Youth-style guitars duelling against a tight, almost Can-like rhythm section. Maybe you can hear PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Prefuse 73 and the occasional hints of Kathleen Hannah in there too, maybe you cant. On their own laurels the band were John Peel favourites, getting their early demos airplay on his shows and having him say kind words about them in the dulcet tones that only John could ever muster. Oh, and Bruce Dickinson is also a fan. Strange, but then, well, who wouldnt be?
