Attempts at defining a workable formula for success in the entertainment field usually go abegging. Yet there’s plenty of evidence to prove the existence of such a formula and The Lenny Herman Quintet is a case in point. According to leader Lenny Herman, the formula rests on playing “music people can understand,” which he ably demonstrates in this, his second volume for SESAC RECORDINGS. Music that is styled for the dancing pulic should offer a light-hearted sprinkling of old and new favorites. Lenny’s program selections were predicated on that fact as he gave equal space to six memorable “oldies” and a half dozen compositions of recent vintage. Each has been carefully dressed in the danceable colors which mark the appeal of this energetic five-man team. Two-thirds of the “melodies of yore” are dedicated to the distaff society as ‘The Mightiest Little Band In The Land’ salutes Martha and Vilia; reminisces on When You And I Were Young, Maggie; and traces the ageless charm of Anitra’s Dance. Two very distinctive arrangements of Melody In F and Long, Long Ago round out these pleasant reflections. The popuar vocal trio within The Lenny Herman Quintet is known as The Hermanaires. They step front and center to describe Honey, Honey, Honey, on Side 1 and encore with a catchy intepretation of It’s You I Love on the flip side. Two new compositions, Say You Do and You Fascinate Me, are rendered in the highly polished Herman manner while I’d Love To Be A Baby Sitter and the moody Latin rhythms of Querida Mia demonstrate the Quintet’s capacity for danceable tempos in every style. Most of the sophisticated supper clubs and hotel lounges throughout the country are on the itinerary of The Lenny Herman Quintet. The reasons for this enduring popularity are the net result of the carefully blended prescription for musical enjoyment which Lenny Herman imparts to his versatile associates. SESAC RECORDINGS are pleased to include ‘The Mightiest Little Band In The Land’ in its catalog of distinctive entertainment.
