We jazz musicians who live in a musical world that depends upon consistent, hopefully inspired and mostly undetermined spontaneous playing are a curious bunch. We strive for the incredible depth and eternal musical heights of the great masterpieces of written music (classical and jazz), yet we insist on accomplishing this as improvisers, a difficult challenge to say the least. But we offer something very special, the possibility of a one time magnificent performance consisting of well written pieces framing great improvisation, all done for a live audience without any “second takes.” That’s what this CD is all about. We set up in the studio, rehearsed, played this gig followed by entering the studio the next day to record what eventually became “Unspoken” (Out Note Records). For several of the tunes the versions on this CD were the premiere performance, therefore capturing the two of us playing as fresh as possible. There’s nothing like the first time!!
