Born in Zamość Marek Grechuta developed his intrest in music at an early age when he learned to play the piano. While studying architecture at Cracow University of Technology he met Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz. They set up a student cabaret Anawa in 1967, which soon became practically Grechuta's band. Anawa received numerous awards at national contests and festivals. Grechuta and Anawa released two albums Marek Grechuta & Anawa in 1970 and Korowód in the following year. He left Anawa in 1971 and formed the band WIEM (W Innej Epoce Muzycznej, Eng. In Different Musical Epoch). With his new band he recorded two albums: Droga za widnokres and Magia obłoków. 
Apart from his solo singer/songwriter career, Grechuta wrote music and lyrics for other artists (e.g. 1977's Guma do żucia performed by Krystyna Janda, with whom he collaborated again on the 1984's W malinowym chruśniaku). 
In mid 1970s he co-wrote (with Krzysztof Jasiński and Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz) a musical Szalona lokomotywa incorporating Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz's poems. 
In 1976 Grechuta began his 10-year long collaboration with Piwnica pod Baranami. Three years later he recorded an album of Tadeusz Nowak's poems. 
One of his last undertakings was a recording of Myslovitz's 1999 song Kraków for the band's The Best Of album in 2003. 
His music is often described as a jazz-influenced mild form of progressive rock. 
Marek Grechuta died in Kraków at the age of 60, being outlived by his wife Danuta (whom he married in 1970). He is buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków.
