Roland "Boy" Katindig is a pianist and a jazz musician. The son of Romy Katindig, he comes from the Katindig clan, a well-known clan of musicians who pioneered Latin jazz in Manila.
Katindig signed up with A&W Records International in 1978 and recorded his first album, “Midnight Lady,” which was named “Best Instrumental Composition” at the Himig Awards. His single “Don’t Ask My Neighbor” was also certified Gold. The album was released in the U.S. by Pausa Records, who had a roster of renowned jazz artists like Tom Grant and Alphonse Mouzon. It was followed by the albums “Aftermidnight” and “Love Fusion,” which received the award “Best Jazz Instrumental and “Best Performance in a Jazz Composition” for its single “It's Still September” from the Cecil Music Awards Foundation. The Boy Katindig Band, which was formed due to Katindig's first album, was also voted Best Jazz Group thrice by the Aliw Awards Foundation.
After performing in Southeast Asian countries in the early 80s, Katindig decided to move to the United States in 1986 to widen his jazz audience. He produced and recorded his first U.S. album together with L.A. jazz luminaries.
While performing in Hawaii in 1990, he met saxophonist Michael Paulo, famous for his stints with Al Jarreau, Kalapana, James Ingram, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins, Patti Austin and mutual friend, David Benoit. Michael, who was looking for artists for his record company, Noteworthy Records, took notice of Katindig’s indie release “Journey To Love” and produced his eponymous CD release in 1995.
After the album's release, Katindig gave several performances around Los Angeles then joined the Michael Paulo Band which featured Seawind’s Pauline Wilson. Among the most significant of these performances were the ones held at the Japan American Theater and at 94.7 The Wave Ala Carte, which featured artists like Branford Marsalis, Jeff Lorber, Tom Scott, Peter White and Rick Braun.
