Emma Richardson of Band of Skulls performs live on the Main Stage on Day Three during the Reading Festival 2012 at Richfield Avenue on August 26, 2012 in Reading, England,"We're packing them in this year,'' Emma Richardson says over the phone from her home in Southampton, England. The Band of Skulls bass player is on a brief break from a hectic tour that includes a return to Australia for Splendour in the Grass and a few sideshows. 
 
Richardson, vocalist-guitarist Russell Marsden and drummer Matthew Hayward come with a far bigger profile than last time. Their second album, Sweet Sour, has them playing next month's Lollapalooza in Chicago before hitting the road with Jane's Addiction and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. 
 
Life on the road was exactly what the trio of long-time friends craved when they were toiling away on early recordings at home in Southampton. Now they've got it in spades. 
 
''It's good for a band to do that [tour extensively] and learn the ropes and know what your strengths are,'' Richardson says. ''It helped us with writing the second [album] and how we work together … you definitely get to figure yourself out on the road.'' 
 
They retreated to a property in Norfolk during a bitter winter to begin writing Sweet Sour after two gruelling years of touring.
