BiographyIn the title track from Acres Of Lions upcoming debut record, entitled "Working", singer-guitarist Jeff Kalesnikoff shouts the words of an anthem that captures the very sentiment of the band's work ethic: "Work hard, make your body sting. Make something out of nothing."It's the same creative drive that brought Jeff together with bass player Dan Ball and drummer Lewis Carter in the summer of 2006. The trio spent the next year working out characteristics the band deemed necessary to their existence as a musical act: melody, volume, spontaneity, odd time signatures and above all else, ENERGY! Songs about everyday encounters with people, films, television, and love (as opposed to heartbreak) soon emerged, and the band began performing at various venues in and around their hometown of Victoria, Canada.In the summer of 2007, Acres Of Lions entered the studio with local producer Adam Sutherland (theset, kincaide, Italian Edition) who helped refine the band's energetic sound and enhance their catchy pop melodies. The result was a three song demo EP that captured the sonic characteristics of the band's original vision and also incorporated the addition of a distinctive new sonic element, the keyboard. Feeling that this would be missed when performing live, the trio soon inducted a fourth member, guitarist/keyboardist Tyson Yerex.With a new lineup solidified and some recorded material under their belts, Acres Of Lions soon caught the attention of Victoria's local rock radio station, The Zone 91.3 FM. In February 2008, music director James Sutton selected the band to be showcased in their "Band Of The Month" promotion, adding the single "Let's Get Sentimental" to the station's playlist. The single was subsequently moved to regular rotation on The Zone where it remained for several months. It was also added to medium rotation on the CBC's Galaxie 'Rock' station, and received feature play on several other commercial radio stations around Canada. In addition, the Acres Of Lions EP also charted well on Canadian college radio, breaking into the Earshot Top 200 Chart for June 2008.Eager to keep the buzz building, and with a slew of new tracks ready for production, Acres Of Lions went back to Adam Sutherland's Infinity Studios to record their debut full-length. Knowing this could be a critical turning point in their career, the band spent countless hours working with Adam to expand upon their music vision, and focused much of their energy on ensuring performances were at their best. In no time the album was shaping up to be what Sutherland called his "strongest production yet".As the album neared completion, the band was approached by indie label fierce panda canada, sibling label to the well know Fierce Panda (UK) label - responsible for introducing the world to such artists as Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, iLiKETRAiNS, Art Brut, and Keane. The label was impressed by the Acres Of Lions demo EP, and signed a record deal with the band soon after hearing raw versions of songs from their upcoming album.Eager to take the production to a new level, Michael Burke (president of fierce panda canada) enlisted world renowned British engineer Warne Livesey to mix and master the record. Having sold over 15 million records, including mixing Matthew Good and Midnight Oil, the band was excited to have his expertise on the project. "Warne is a legend, plus the fact that he's transplanted to Victoria made him the obvious choice." said Yerex.With the album now completed, Acres Of Lions is spending the fall and winter on the road, eagerly awaiting their hard work to be unleashed on the world.'Working' will be released in Canada February 10, 2009 through Fontana North / Universal Music.
