Quickbeam, a band formed by Monika Gromek in Glasgow in 2009, have been growing and refining their sound over the last few years. Monika was joined by Aberdonian guitarist Andrew Thomson when they discovered a mutual taste for sparse, minimalistic music. They played and wrote as a duo taking time to develop their ideas, and built up a collection of instruments (including an Indian Harmonium) which helped define their sound.
An early demo caught the attention of Steve Lamacq who played the band on his BBC 6Music show, which led to further airplay on Vic Galloway’s ‘BBC Introducing In Scotland’ on BBC Radio 1. They soon found they needed to recruit another member to realise their ideas, and in 2010 were joined by violist Nichola Kerr.
The band set about recording a collection of tracks with producer Chris Gordon, known for his work with Union of Knives (Relentless) and Song of Return. The recording process refined their sound further and lead to the addition of three new members on Cello, Double Bass and Percussion. Although they now play as a six piece, the band stay true to their original sparse and minimal style.
Recently the band have been working with fledgling Glasgow based label Comets and Cartwheels who will be releasing Quickbeam’s debut single ‘Seven Hundred Birds’, a product of their recording sessions with Chris Gordon, on 9th April. As part of the release they have worked on a music promo video with London based production company Crush Film, whose director of photography has recently worked on features including Jane Eyre, This Is England, and both of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies. The director of the video, Mat Sheldon, has previously had his work nominated for a Kodak Short Film BAFTA.
