The eef van breen group, a dutch based group of musicians and a theatre director, was founded in 2007. Since their existence the group is experimenting with the emotional possibilities of a concert. Not only by writing compositions and performing them, but also by presenting their music in new ways. On their latest cd „changing scenes“ they started to implement life ambient sounds in the compositions. 
Trompettist, zanger en componist Eef van Breen (1978) komt vanuit een jazz achtergrond maar laat zich sterk beïnvloeden en inspireren door klassieke componisten als Igor Stravinsky en Dmitri Shostakovitsj en andere kunstvormen als dans, literatuur en film.
Zijn debuutalbum ‘Playing Games’ (2010, Challenge Jazz) werd unaniem door de pers geprezen en veroorzaakte een ‘buzz’ in de muziekwereld. Zijn geheel eigen sound getuigt van originaliteit en lef, niet in de laatste plaats door de opmerkelijke line-up; trompet/vocals, twee violen, harp, cello, contrabas en piano. Het album ontving een Edison nominatie (2011) “Muziek van een bedwelmende schoonheid.”
Met zijn nieuwe album CHANGING SCENES (2012) en de Change Your Scene beweging speelt Van Breen met veranderende contexten. De luisteraar waant zich een personage in een film. Wegstervende voetstappen, slaande deuren, brekend glas en tikkende klokken worden tot een driedimensionaal decor met zorgvuldig uitgesponnen composities; Omhuld worden door een kleurrijke visuele ervaring zonder iets te zien. Zie www.changeyourscene.com.
Composities
Van Breen staat niet alleen op het podium als uitvoerder van zijn eigen composities; ook componeert hij voor film (Winner Best Original Music Award 2004 filmfestival Reus, Spanje), theater en dans gezelschappen (Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Toneelschuur Haarlem e.a.) en diverse kamermuziekensembles. In 2011 schreef hij de eerste buitenaardse opera op aarde; de Klingon-opera ‘u’, regie Floris Schönfeld. De opera behaalde de elfde plaats op de lijst ‘ten most essential things of the world’ van de New York Times.
In februari 2011 bracht zijn goede vriendin en celliste Amber Docters van Leeuwen zijn compositie FLAVOURS in première in Carnegie Hall, NYC (USA), Van Breen maakte daarmee zijn internationaal compositiedebuut.

Van Breen trad op tijdens internationale festivals als The North Sea Jazz Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Klaipeda Jazz Festival (Litouwen), The Barbican in Londen (met Toneelgroep Amsterdam) e.a. Hij richtte een bigband op aan de Sichuan Conservatory in Chengdu (China). In 2007 studeerde Van Breen af aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag.

Dutch trumpeter, vocalist and composer Eef van Breen (1978) has a clear jazz background but is strongly influenced by classical composers such as Dmitri Shostakovitsj and Igor Stravinsky and film, dance and other arts forms. His musical vision has been developed with a new unique sound as a result of that. His own group has a remarkable line-up of trumpet/vocals, two violins, harp, cello, double bass, piano and foley artist that allows him to write in a most colourful and symphonic way.
His debut album PLAYING GAMES (2010, Challenge Jazz) was unanimously praised by the press and obtained an Edison nomination. The album caused a buzz in the music world.
On his new album CHANGING SCENES to be released in April 2012, Van Breen is playing around with changing contexts. The listener imagines himself a character in a film. Dying footsteps, slamming doors, breaking glass and ticking clocks become a three-dimensional set with carefully wrought compositions. To be enveloped by a colourful, visual experience without seeing.
Compositions
Not only is Van Breen a performer of his own compositions on stage; He composes as well for film (Winner Best Original Music Award 2004 film festival Reus, Spain), theatre (Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Toneelschuur Haarlem a.o), modern dance and several renowned chamber music ensembles. He wrote the first authentic Klingon opera on earth that was listed in the New York Times as number eleven of the ‘ten most essential things of the world’. He made his international debut as a composer in February 2011 with his composition ‘Flavours’ for cello solo that was premiered by Amber Docters van Leeuwen in Carnegie Hall, New York (USA). Later that year Eef was commissioned to write a composition for the annual Queens speech.

Van Breen performed worldwide at festivals such as The North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Atlanta Jazz Festival, the Klaipeda Jazz Festival Lithuenia and the Barbican in Londen (Toneelgroep Amsterdam). Further more he performed in Chengdu (China) where he founded a big band at the Sichuan Conservatory and Istanbul (Turkey). 

In 2004 Van Breen made a study trip to the U.S. to obtain lessons with some of his hero’s, the legendary Clark Terry, Lou Soloff and jazz messenger Philip Harper. He graduated at the conservatory of The Hague in 2007. 
THE NEW ALBUM ‘CHANGING SCENES’ (Challenge Jazz) by the EEF VAN BREEN GROUP
Sometimes in the creative process, things just seem to come together; be it a musical idea, a fantasy, daily life, a dream or even current affairs.
The idea of Changing Scenes and the use of sounds from all around us reproduced by a foley artist, was born during the recordings of the documentary PLAYING NEW YORK, in which the Eef van Breen Group sings a drawn-out melody in the streets of New York. In his hotel, van Breen listened again to an audio fragment of a group of Mexican percussionists he had met along the way on the subway. Percussion and the subway rumble momentarily merge in a most wonderful way and an added layer is created when it is no longer clear what is orchestrated or accidental. As soon as the subway is gone, it is the people that are passed by. Fleeting. It is no longer about the music. The musicians are unaware; they have become part of larger whole.
Eef van Breen uses these extra layers in his compositions for CHANGING SCENES, most of them part of different multi-discipline projects; a documentary, a dance performance, a theatre play and a movie without image. Van Breen about his album:
“I am not so much looking to wrong-foot the audience as much as surprise them with Changing Scenes, give them an experience that is more than simply auditory. As if they are film stars. Recalling images. I want to take it a step beyond, by embracing reality; the world we all live in. Not just the dreamy-eyed bits. Also the frustration, melancholy, energy and aggression. All aspects of man. That is done by changing scenes.”
