Engaging listeners with vibrant vocals that range from quiet vulnerability to soul-tinged power, jazz vocalist Karla Harris brings nuance, refreshing lyricism, and a compelling stage presence to music audiences across North America.
Karla performs as a featured artist at clubs, resorts, conventions, concert halls and festivals. Her musical repertoire is a vast tapestry of standards that cross musical eras and genres. Clubscene magazine writes, "Karla Harris...takes the stage by storm and doesn't let go 'til it's all over... She engages the audience and makes us happy to be sharing the evening with her."
Karla's career began at a young age when, as a teen in her hometown of St. Louis, she worked in a jazz quartet, singing alongside one of the Midwest's most revered jazz singers, Jeanne Trevor. It wasn't long before Karla was performing on her own with many of the area's best instrumentalists, distinguishing herself as a lively entertainer and one of the region's most expressive vocalists.
Her reputation has only grown since a move to the Pacific Northwest in 2005. Backed by musicians whose work includes touring and recording with stars such as Etta James, Diane Schuur, Joe Cocker, Ben Vereen and Mel Torme, Karla delivers a song with warmth and spirit uniquely hers. As one fellow musician puts it, "Karla performs with conviction no matter what the style. Her art is her ability to emote."
In 2004, Karla accepted an invitation to join Tom Kennedy, an internationally acclaimed jazz bassist known for his work with such greats as Rosemary Clooney, Freddie Hubbard, Mike Stern and Dave Weckl. With Tom's own quartet, Karla delved more deeply into her jazz roots, displaying a soulful gift for conveying the melodies and lyrics of the great standards. Their collaboration moved from stage to studio when Karla and Tom recorded "Twice as Nice," a CD featuring 14 tunes from seven favorite jazz composers.
Of her work, Jazz Scene (Jazz Society of Oregon) writes, "Always respectful of her American Songbook choices, Harris has superb intonation and a contemporary, yet appealing approach to the songs."
Karla's most recent project is her original show, WINE, WOMAN & SONG, where she presents "flights" of music and wine designed to enhance the experience of each. Audiences call it "superb," "unique," "fascinating," and "surprisingly fun."
