THE VAGARY is an indie rock band from Amsterdam formed in 2011 by Thijs Havens (vocals, keys, guitar), Julien Staartjes (guitar), Lukas Verburgt (drums) and Bowie Verschuuren (bass). Thijs and Julien had been around in the alternative band scene for some time as members of Saelors, Les Singes and Light Light but with The Vagary, the four could explore a shared obsession with the simplicity of pop and the live energy of raw, stripped-down rock music. This lead them to a distinctive sound “somewhere between Bryan Ferry’s 80s synth pop and the Velvet Underground”.
Soon The Vagary played a considerable amount of shows, opening for Pete Doherty and Kurt Vile among many others. This earned them a solid live reputation which they consolidated by winning the Amsterdam Pop Prize 2012 (“They look good, the songs are exciting and the sound is good” said the jury). Meanwhile they had caught the attention of VICE magazine, FOAM and Glamcult who asked them for events and (inter)national campaigns.
In the spring of 2013, The Vagary made their inevitable national television debut on 'De Wereld Draait Door' and in the summer of that year, the band worked on recordings for their debut album. They got signed to record label [PIAS] and late 2013 saw the release of first single “Time Machine” which introduced the band to a national audience through airplay on 3FM. Soon thereafter they played Eurosonic Noorderslag 2014 where they lived up to the expectations;

Comparisons to The Cars, The Virgins, Tom Petty and The Strokes made by the press are understandable but The Vagary is after a very own, timeless combination of powerful guitars and synths, with a lingering melancholy like a sunset in a deserted city.
“Come Back” is the new single and their debut LP "Salute" was released on August 22nd. Now the ‘new asset to Dutch pop music ‘ (3voor12) go on to prove they fully deserve that predicate.
