A multi-instrumentalist, Housden began playing the piano at the age of 8 before going on to learn the guitar, drums, bass and becoming a trained vocalist during his teenage years. He spent the early part of his career writing, performing, recording and touring in bands and theatre productions, traveling the length and breadth of the country and Europe, playing to crowds of up to 7000 people at a time. In 2010 he left the live circuit behind, choosing instead to focus on his studies. It was here that he developed his love for composing to picture and visual arts. Studying at an Avid sponsored school he was trained in Pro-Tools 101, 110 and 130 (a course specifically tailored for the use of Pro-Tools in game audio) and went on to receive work experience writing additional music and sound effects for Outer Empires, the first MMO ever developed for iOS.
Graduating in 2011 with a BA in Music Production and a 1st in Composition, he wasted no time in securing his first commission with Mike Bithell, Lead Designer at Bossa Studios. Together, they collaborated on Mike’s indie side-project the critically acclaimed Thomas Was Alone. Such was the popularity and demand, the soundtrack went on to receive an official release on iTunes and other online retailers. Both the game and soundtrack have enjoyed rave reviews across the board, receiving BAFTA nominations for ‘Best Story’, ‘Best Original Music’ and ‘Best Performance’ (for which it went on to win); as well as Honourable mentions from the Independent Games Festival for Excellence in Visual Design and Excellence in audio. In March 2013 excerpts from Housden’s BAFTA nominated score were performed and recorded in Holland by a live ensemble organised by Dutch Game Music. The concert was dedicated to indie games and featured a selected track from the OST expertly arranged for live performance, among pieces from Minecraft, Journey, Dear Esther, Fez, & Super Meat Boy.
After developing a highly successful working relationship, David went on to become contracted by Bossa Studios for audio work on their flagship title Monstermind. He was given full audio responsibility both composing the score and creating the sound design for what was the first ever peer to peer Facebook game. After months of work, this title went on to be nominated for BAFTA’s in the ‘Best Debut Game’ and ‘Best Online-Browser Game’ categories, for which it won in 2012.
Since then, David has worked on numerous productions with developers across the spectrum of mobile and social gaming platforms, and in the latter part of the year he was contracted for work by nDreams, creators of Playstation Home for PS3. He created a volume of original compositions for this online network of over 200000 users, in a variety of genres spanning from rock to chill. Continuing to show his versatility, Housden went on to work with Jonathan Ross and his team at Hotsauce Interactive Studios, collaborating on their debut title Catcha Catcha Aliens. Jonathan required an eclectic soundtrack with influences ranging from Dick Dale through to Skrillex, which provided a fresh challenge and required a new approach. Breaking away from his orchestral work the OST, which has been put forward for BAFTA consideration, includes rockabilly, 50′s surf, dub-step, chip-tune and electro tracks, completing one of the most diverse scores of the year. With this all-star team rounded off by narration from Stephen Fry, the game went on to be a huge success and has received a slew of positive press since it’s release.
Housden finished the year returning to his Facebook routes and composed the music and sound effects for Bubo Drop, the debut title from BAFTA award winning indie veteran Ric Moore’s start-up, Flying Ant Day Studios. Due for release in 2013, this light-hearted woodwind based score shows yet another example of Housden’s ability to perfectly marry sound to picture.
Off the back of his recent successes, David has been commissioned for guest lectures in composition at various universities and colleges. He’s been booked for a number of talks this year, including a lecture on game music at the Utrecht School of Arts in Holland.
With current projects including the creation of cues for movies and television, plus the scoring of a feature film; 2013 promises to be another important year for this man and the people he’s involved with.
