The Mad Caps are a two-piece rock and roll band from Las Vegas, now residing in Seattle. They’ve been called “Elvis From Hell,” “The Sexual Sasquatch,” or “Las Vegas’ Greatest Unknown Duo,” but they’re probably best known as one of last groups who hasn’t forgotten what rock and roll is all about … which begs the question: What is rock and roll all about? Just ask your girlfriend. She’s the one at the front of the stage dancing her ass off with all her friends. She doesn’t care about what scale Ted Rader uses to rip through a fuzzed-out solo, but she feels the sexual tension in the bent notes. She doesn’t know that Jon Real has a secret life as a mechanical engineer, but somewhere deep inside, her biorhythms sync with the precision of his mathematic pounding and she becomes possessed by the groove.
She probably recognizes Rader’s baritone howl as similar to that of the one and only King of Rock and Roll’s, but this isn’t her grandfather’s music. And with the twangy blues-based grooves of Rader's picking and Real's solid two and four, she might hear the distant call of The Rolling Stones, but this isn't her father's music. Another point of reference may be the glam-psychobilly of The Cramps, but this ain’t her weird older brother’s music either – these guys wouldn’t be caught dead in high-heeled shoes and makeup (Halloween doesn't count).
While the ladies may love The Mad Caps, make no mistake, this is men’s music. It’s loud. It’s raw. It’s often bloody. And these two dudes can move more dead air than most bands twice their size. But the real reason The Mad Caps are one of the last true rock and roll bands, is because without castrating the intensity of their sound, they give the ladies what they need: Something to move to. And this, of course, makes the ladies happy. And when the ladies are happy, everyone is happy. So the next time you’re at a Mad Caps show, get your ass on the dance floor. No matter who you are, you’ll be thanking them afterwards. You’ll be thanking rock and roll.
