Shy Sharity. It’s a name that even sounds effervescent, positive and friendly. The Vancouver pop singer-guitarist is determined to present this strong part of her personality in her music.
“My friends say I’m an energizer bunny, a psycho Barbie and that I bring out the crazy in them,” Shy laughs. “And I want my music to be relatable to young girls, something fun and energetic and a positive outlook on life. It’s not all bubblegum and lollipops, but my motto is to see through the rain.”
The upbeat “Think Love,” written with the Guess Who’s Randy Bachman, is about radiating love around the globe, while a break-up song like “Going To California,” a duet with Dave Faber of the pop band Faber Drive, is about letting go and holding your head up high. Whatever the subject matter, good or bad, there’s always a silver lining in her songs.
Shy just isn’t one of the mean girls. She wakes up positive and goes to bed positive. She’s always had a support team, her family and friends, and wants to provide that to other young people. “The media doesn’t always portray the most positive message for girls so it’s important to be fine with who you are, pursue your dreams and be positive in the way you do it.”
Shy’s dreams have always been in the entertainment world and she has had considerable success in music and acting. Since appearing in her first commercial at age 9, she has gone on to principal, supporting and guest roles in several TV shows, including The Dead Zone, and feature-length films, such as Door To Door with William H. Macy and Kira Sedgwick and School of Life with Ryan Reynolds. But it is music that is her singular focus now.
She sang in public for the first time at age 5 and proceeded to collect numerous vocal awards in her youth, such as Most Promising Junior Vocalist at the Pacific Northwest Music Festival. She also won eight gold medals at the Coquitlam and Burnaby Clef Music Society festivals. Later, she joined classical group Winter Harp as its junior vocalist. For high school, she transferred to Pacific Academy where again she excelled and won more awards.
The past three years at Trinity Western University, while earning a Communications degree in media stream, Shy fronted bands of various styles — alternative, acoustic, Christian, and pop with tinges of country. She also leads a worship music group called Youth Church on Sunday evenings. She’ll always write Christian music, she says, but is concentrating on a pop career.
The turning point was winning British Columbia’s Variety's Got Talent earlier this year, which led to opening slots for Wynonna Judd and Dierks Bentley. Next, right when she had exams, she entered MuchMusic’s online contest, Much Covers, by video-recording a version of Metric’s “Give Me Sympathy” an hour before the contest closed. Not only did she make the Top 10, but she received an email from a manager who loved her submission and flew her to Toronto to meet her. “Now we’re best buds,” Shy proclaims — as well as her manager. Shy has since co-written with Randy Bachman, Dan Hill and Dave Faber and is amassing material for a full album.
“I’m making sure that I have fun at it every step of the way,” she says. “I’m working towards sharing my music with other people and being a positive influence on younger girls, and collaborating and being creative with others. I know sometimes it will be hard, but I’m determined to do the best I can.”
