Since 1993 when Souls of Mischief dropped their freshman album 93 ‘Til Infinity, the name Phesto has been synonymous with lyricism among Hip Hop fans. Flash forward to 2009, and Phesto is prepared to release his first solo effort entitled Background Check.  
 
Growing up in East Oakland in the same neighborhood as Del, Phesto attended the same junior high school as Tajai, who introduced him to A-Plus, Opio and Casual. When Tajai, A-Plus and Opio formed Souls of Mischief, Phesto was asked to join as the fourth member of the group. 
 
Although Phesto is well known and critically acclaimed for his intricate lyrics and charisma as an MC, he is also a seasoned producer who has been honing his craft for 14 years. His production credits include “Phesto Dee” from Hieroglyphics’ Third Eye Vision album, “This is for My Niggas” from Casual’s album Meanwhile, “Airborne Rangers” from the Souls of Mischief album Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution, & “Shift the Sands”, “Way too Cold” and “Maximize Third Eyes” (12” B-Side) from the Souls of Mischief album Focus.  
 
Background Check is a showcase for Phesto’s beats and the first time he’s produced the majority of an album. “When people listen to my album I don’t think they’re hear any esoteric musicality, I just think its Hip Hop to the core,” explains Phesto. “I like my beats harder, that’s the stuff I rap over. That’s why I chose to do the majority of the production on the album. It was a conscious effort to make people aware of the fact that I am a producer.” In addition to Phesto’s production, the album also includes beats from A-Plus, Tone Capone, Domino, DJ Khalil, Architect, Mike Loe, and Kev Choice. 
 
As with everything the members of Hieroglyphics and Souls of Mischief do, Phesto takes the creation of music seriously. “I’m at the age now where if you ask me what I am I’ll tell you I’m a musician. 15 years ago, I might have said I’m a rapper. I’m actually enrolled in school studying music theory. I wanted to get classical training because if I’m going to be a musician I want to be the best musician I can be. I want to see all sides of the prism.” Musicians Kev Choice (piano/organ/Moog), Uncle Ron (guitar) and Nayo LaFreniere (vocals) are featured on the album. 
 
Since Background Check is Phesto’s literal introduction as a solo artist, the album title invites old-school fans and future listeners to do just that – check the sounds and statistics on Hieroglyphics, Souls of Mischief, and Phesto himself. “It’s a multifold meaning, obviously similar to when you apply for a job they do a background check to see what you’re about,” Phesto says when asked about the album title. “Another meaning to me is people say ‘chin check’ or ‘gut check’, basically this is like ‘background check’, whether its mine or yours. I have a long track record but I want people to do their homework and check what I’m about.”
