oday’s recording artists run the gamut: There are those who are “studio” performers - their performances peaking on anything recorded; and those who are good, all around entertainers. You have those who are famous for being cultural and/or fashion trendsetters first – that then becoming a platform for their music careers; and then those who are “performer, performers” or “singer singers.” Those talented group of people who are singers first and foremost and, when describing them to someone else, one might be tempted to say something like - “You have to see her live; She’s a performer performer!” Perhaps, so good you have to say it twice, or maybe just so rare you can’t quite find one word that fits so you put two together to simply explain that this is someone who can really, really sing.
Prepare to get to know Jessy Wilson. She falls in that last group. - - The people who “sing, sing,” in addition to the other talents she possess.
Jessy Wilson, a singer and songwriter who began singing at the age of 3, and by the time she was 7 had already traveled throughout the United States and Asia singing in musical theatre and musicals.
With a voice that is both powerful and uncommonly sweet, and youthful, despite it’s apparent wisdom, you can pretty much say that Jessy Wilson has been singing since she could talk. So it was only natural that she went on to major in voice at one of the most famous music and arts schools in the world - Fiorello H. LaGuardia H.S. - Of “Fame” legend (both the 1980 and 2009 versions), and who’s famous and successful alumni could fill a fancy red carpet affair.
Not many singers can say that they got their professional start singing background for a multi- platinum, 11 Grammy award winning artist, but Jessy went on to do just that when she began singing background for R&B music superstar Alicia Keys and her 25 million fans.
In 2006, shortly after her work with Alicia, Jessy began singing with John Legend. One day, not long after beginning her work as a background singer for John, Jessy asked him if she could tag along to the studio. He obliged and during these sessions he would occasionally ask her her opinion on songs. She, in turn, would offer lyrical ideas and, for John Legend, Jessy went on to co-write “Save Room,” “P.D.A.,” “We Just Don't Care,” “Heaven Only Knows,” “Another Again,” and worked with super producers Kanye West, will.i.am, Pharrell and many others.
Thoroughly enthralled by the way creative minds came together to create music through their personal vulnerabilities and truths, Jessy fell in love with the process and made the decision to pursue writing. Living in NYC at the time, she called an A&R friend whom she had met through John and he agreed to help her pursue her dream. He was based in Atlanta so, in late 2008, Jessy picked up and moved. Upon arriving in Atlanta, she barely had the chance to get settled before she was immediately thrown into the exciting world of songwriting with her very first writing session being with superstar singer and entertainer Usher.
Jessy penned 3 songs on Fantasia's last album BACK TO ME, which, in 2011 earned Jessy her first Grammy nomination for the Best R&B Album category. She also wrote a song on Mario's last album DNA. In early 2012, Jessy received her second Grammy nomination in the same
category for Ledisi's album PIECES OF ME, for which she co-wrote the song “I Miss You Now;” and she worked with Keyshia Cole on her soon to be released come back album.
After singing background for superstar acts, traveling the world to perform with them, and continuing to conquer the world of songwriting, in 2012 Jessy Wilson began the journey of becoming a solo artist. She is currently in the studio in NY, L.A. and Philly recording songs for her forthcoming album to be released September 21st 2012.
