In compiling their vast repertoire of folk songs, the internationally known Gene and Francesca have travelled and lived in various parts of the world, absorbed the cultures and learned the languages of many foreign lands. But they have also been influenced by the cosmopolitan atmosphere of their home town, New York City. There, Francesca writes novels, runs a radio show and takes care of the children, while Gene teaches architecture at Columbia University and writes plays. They enjoy singing appealing songs from anywhere in the world, including their own apartment (the selection Dugan is an original composition). Even though these renditions may seem deceptively simple, the artists work extremely hard to meet the most exacting performance standards. Their interpretations may be detailed into four categories: songs of farewell, of romance, of the soil, and unusual numbers such as the American The Riddle Song and the Russian Oo Papa. The farewell songs are mainly colorful sea chanties in which sailors say goodbye to their sweethearts on shore. The Barbados air Venezuela, the old English Turtle Dove and the American Rio Grande are in that tradition. The romantic items carry such titles as Dabblin' In The Dew, Lolly Too Dum and Black Jack Gipsy. The songs of the soil include the Hebrew Se Vagdi (Shepherd's Song) and the Mexican Guadalajara. These are but some of the folk songs endowed with the particular and personal Gene and Francesca coloration and styling, which have charmed audiences wherever they have played.
